Blog #6 for Week 7

ID1605 should research and blog on landscape and pool lighting as well as fiber optics and LEDs.

ID1608 should blog on image projections in commercial and performance lighting as well as catch up older blogs.

You will be presenting your light fixtures next week. I also need 11 x 17 pages with notes sketches and photos of your light fixture.

We will have a studio day other than that so bring research and whatever supplies you need to work on your final projects.

Thanks, off you go.

I chose to look at outdoor rooms for my research, because that is basically what I would consider the exterior of my getaway house to be and where I see the homeowners spending a large chunk of their time.

The article I found said "Keep both aesthetics and function in mind when constructing outdoor rooms. But in areas dedicated to physical activity, if you have to choose between the two, focus on function." Landscaping near swimming pools can have many obstacles when safety is at hand. Slipping on anything, constantly cleaning debris and leaves, and privacy are all things you want to focus on.

I also read that solar lights are easy to install and can be a DIY project in the yard. Landscape lights can provide security as well as beauty.

The 3 types of outdoor lights are solar, LED, and low voltage fixtures, which have wires running underground.

LEDs can now take the place of incandescent installations. They have an avg. life span of 11 years, and are "impervious to electrical and mechanical shocks." These can also be used in conjunction with solar power systems.

The prices for one style of LED starts @ $29.95.

I found all of this info to be extremely helpful, especially regarding the LEDs. If I had any doubts about using them before, this just made my decision 100% positive that I would.

Here are the sites where I obtained my information:

Projection screens are installations consisting of blank surface and a support structure used for displaying a projected image for the view of an audience. Projection screens may be permanently installed as in a movie theater, painted on the wall [1], semi-permanent or mobile, as in a conference room or other non-dedicated viewing space. Uniformly white or grey screens are used almost exclusively as to avoid any discoloration to the image, while the most desired brightness of the screen depends on a number of variables, such as the ambient light level and the luminous power of the image source. Flat or curved screens may be used depending on the optics used to project the image and the desired geometrical accuracy of the image production, flat screens being the more common of the two. Screens can be further designed for front or back projection, the more common front projection systems having the image source situated on the same side of the screen as the audience.

Fiber optics provide a soothing feel for your swimming pool. The Illuminator or light source contains a spinning color wheel that is distributed through the fiber optic cable and out the light fixture. If you have multiple light sources attached the same Illuminator you will therefore have the same color changing affect throughout your swimming pool. There are several light fixtures to choose from. Perimeter lighting goes around the entire perimeter of the swimming pool lighting the entire swimming pool. Other light fixtures can be found for fiber optic lighting to light up both your swimming pool and landscape around the swimming pool.
